Your Local Howick Acupuncturists

Acupuncture is one of the most popular and well known modalities in Traditional Chinese Medicine which can also include cupping, use of a warming stick (moxibustion), guasha or tuina (Chinese massage) and herbal medicine.

Acupuncture is about activating our body’s healing system, and unleashing our natural healing power.

The classical Chinese explanation of how Acupuncture works is that energy runs in regular patterns or channels throughout the body called meridians. They can be thought of as rivers flowing through the body to irrigate and nourish the tissues. Very fine Acupuncture needles are then inserted along these meridians to unblock any obstructions and reestablish the flow of meridians to restore balance and harmony in the body.

Acupuncture needles howickBiomedical explanations focus on the physiological effects of skin puncture and/or modulation of neurotransmitters and activation of the body’s anti-inflammatory response leading to reduced inflammation. This process helps our body to self-heal for both physical and emotional well-being.

According to the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH), Acupuncture has been proven to help in cases of low back pain, neck pain, knee pain, osteoarthritis, headaches and migraines.

A visit to an Acupuncturist will usually take up to an hour, with the needles being left in place for 20-25 minutes of that time. Very often people go into a state of deep relaxation whilst the needles are in place and many drift off into a brief but sound sleep. Acupuncture is widely known for its effectiveness in treating musculo-skeletal injuries but has traditionally been used extensively in the treatment of respiratory, digestive, gynaecological and many other chronic conditions.
